Big.. Hairy... and Audacious

Calling all New Year’s Resolutioners and all the folks that are beginning to feel their motivation waning a bit!! By now, most of the Resolutioners have pooped-out, and the “half-heartedly” committed folks are realizing that they don’t have a desire to maintain the crazy diets or the workout schedule they thought would deliver fast results.

Why? Here are a few reasons...

  1. Burnout. Going too hard from the start without easing into a solid regimen to ensure longevity.
  2. It was only a social agreement. Not only have you let off the gas -- friends and co-workers have too. The healthy eating and gym going have simply just fizzled out over the past couple of months.
  3. Results. We have fast-paced lives where quick results and turnaround are expected. Physical transformation takes time!
I'd say the main contributor to people giving up so fast is the failure to set goals, develop a game plan, and trust that plan to reach the set goals.

Determine Your Destination by Setting Goals!

A friend once said, “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” This couldn’t be any truer in a weight-loss journey. If you say you need to lose 50 pounds (40, 30, 20, 10, or 5lbs) there is a series of steps that must be taken, And the very first step is to set goals for yourself!

There are three types of goals you should create for yourself:

Small Measurable Goals:

These goals are simple and often times can only be observed by you. Example #1) You can finally button that nice pair of jeans you were given 6-9 months ago. Example #2) You are no longer winded after climbing the stairs or walking-in from the parking lot. Example #3) You did not finish everything on your plate at dinner because you were full.

Achievable Milestones:

These goals are slightly more complex and take a bit more work, but not only can you see the results but others can too. Example #1) You have lost the first 10, 20, 30, or 40 pounds. Example #2) You need a few new outfits or an entirely new wardrobe. Example #3) Running a few miles or working out for over an hour excites you and does not bring about anxiety.

BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal):

These goals are the ones that you set that are so outlandish that people think you are crazy. Example #1) You desire to lose 200lbs in a year. Example #2) You wish to train for a marathon in a year. Example #3) You want to fit into clothes four sizes smaller then you are currently. If your spine doesn’t tingle after setting this goal or your mind doubts its own sanity, then you didn’t set it high enough!
