One Man’s Race is another Man’s Milestone - VA 4 Miler

I did it, I really just completed the 4-miler!” That is what I was saying to myself (in my head) in celebration of finishing the VA 4-Miler on Saturday, September 27th, 2014. It was such an emotional moment for me, tons of things were flying around in my head. I had finished my first race, ever! This is definitely the first of many to come in my future; I set the goal for myself that after losing a total of 300 lbs I would start training for a marathon. It is my desire to go from 539 lbs to running a marathon, going from one end of the spectrum to the other.

As I reflect over the completion of the race, it is hard for me to believe at times that literally 18 months ago I needed a cane to get around, it was difficult for me to get up-and-down out of the chair or off the couch, walking just across the room could hurl me into a coughing fit or take my breath away, and my doctors were entertaining the idea of exploratory knee surgery to discover where my pain might be coming from. Here I am, standing at the finish line – no cane, no pain, and my whole new life. Knowing where I have been and where I am going in the future causes a fountain of healthy pride to well up inside of me for being able to complete 4 miles of uphill track. I plan to “keep on keepin’ on” cause I am never turning back to who I used to be. Yes, it has been tough, but I have my eye on the prize!

PS: Along with the VA 4-Miler, I participated in the Live Healthy Lynchburg - 100 Mile Challenge. I did over 135 miles from July to September!
